My Crown (Lyrics)

I'm just a ripple singled out within my consciousness
Amalgam of the symbols written down by the anonymous
The base on which I sit and spin the tales of distant days
The page on which I raise the myth and place it in a way
That makes a living maze that shapes the changes in my days
Creates the space that gives me faith to face the hatred full of grace
Placed the flame of St Germaine into the stations through the game
"Initiate" through cyberspace into the nature of the name:
Joe's Iris
Showing him the rod-cone road
Supplying his poems with the eye's part of the whole known show
Flow's reliant on both parts, applying known and unknown
What hides behind the lies in time gives rise and lights my soul
My crown is my connection from my breath into the breathless
It's the neverending essence that gets lost in every message
It's best expressed in silence and it hides in every instance
When connected to your chest it's the way to live Infinite.

Yes, this is Actually Happening, continually.

For those of you who haven't heard the news--or for those who have, but are genuinely interested in knowing more--my close friend and music associate, DMLH, has released his brand new full-length album, Actually Happening, produced entirely by myself. DMLH has expressed that the album is an open-ended conversation, so here is my initial response.

I met DMLH outside of Slabtown Bar at the Graymaker/Taxidermy Records Tour kick-off party late 2009. During Gepetto's set, DMLH was one of the only people in the crowd I noticed fully appreciating what was transpiring. I thought to myself, "Here's a real hip-hop head. I'm gonna have to hit him with a flyer in a minute." The set finished and the bar emptied onto the sidewalk for the customary post-set smoke sesh that is a familiar part of any music scene. At the time, I was promoting the GAIA mix-tapes presented by my homey, El*A*Kwents, from back east, so I naturally approached this unknown character wearing a rustic fedora with familiarity. He would later tell me that he thought I was a cop, at the time. Of course, I mentioned that I also made beats, and he grabbed my number for a future encounter. The night ended with Sleep and Abadawn schoolin us at the freestyle game in the lot (I was having an off-night due to inebriation and overconfidence).

Over the course of the next few months DMLH would pop over to my crib. We'd listen to beats, smoke some herbs or cigs on the porch, trade rhymes, and philosophies. Slowly, the music began to evolve, as did our friendship. And something else. A scene. A dream. A dialog between the world of the seen and unseen, between friends and new faces. And DMLH gathered the spirit of it all, and planted it in the music.

Of course, all this time the sounds inspiring the words coalesced. DMLH introduced me to Vanessa Marie Gonzalez, an amazingly talented violinist and visual artist who would share many adventures with me; we would play songs back and forth for hours until the sun rose, fueling the production that would eventually be Actually Happening. The emotion and vibrance apparent in the music was generated by a scene orbiting its very creator, DMLH. Both the lyrics and beats speak directly of the experiences of the past year, colored by a "summer of love", illuminated by the experience's reflection in the music.

From humble beginnings a mighty oak grows; so it goes with Actually Happening. To know our past is to know our future. The back story is now known. The future is yours to write.
